  • Boldly Going: A History of Firsts at WordCamp Santa Clarita

    If You Build It, They Will Come

    To acquaint you with our local WordPress community here in Santa Clarita, here are some quick facts:

    • Our Community “officially” launched in 2017, inheriting a group that talked technology and WordPress at the Old Town Newhall branch of the Santa Clarita Public Library;
    • Santa Clarita is almost 30 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles and is the third-largest city in Los Angeles County; and
    • Our first WordCamp Santa Clarita took place during Spring Break 2019, with a theme celebrating the area’s founding role in the Western genre on Film and Television. We focused on Santa Clarita’s Race Car and Amusement Park histories at subsequent WordPress Events.

    Boldly going where no (WordCamp) has gone before

    Local events offer you the same learning, networking, and inspiration of a Flagship event, but on a smaller, more personal scale. Our WordCamp grew in attendance and energy each of its first three editions, and we’re excited to return and break new ground like:

    • WordCamp Santa Clarita ’19 was the first event south of San Francisco and north of Los Angeles since 2015 (WordCamp Ventura);
    • Hosted two WordPress Coffee Meetups onsite at WordCamp US (San Diego, Portland) with GreenGeeks Web Hosting;
    • Our WordPress Events have spotlighted 87 speakers at three WordCamps, an additional 15 at Meetups (excluding shared Mega Meetups), and hosted the first WordCamp to feature a dedicated accessibility track with 15 speakers; and
    • Our members have presented at flagship WordCamps (US, Asia), WordPress events (Big Orange Heart, WordPress Accessibility Day, local/regional WordCamps (Canada, San José), and more.

    Playlist: WordPress Core Release

    Congratulations to all of the incredible contributors who made the release of WordPress 7.0 possible. There were over 875 contributors in countries all over the world, including over 200 first-time contributors.

    What a Wonderful (Hello) World

    Did you know that each release honors an important voice in Jazz? It is an art form that originated in the United States over a century ago, and has traveled the world with greats like WordPress 7.0 release’s namesake, Louis Armstrong.

    Born Louis Daniel Armstrong and nicknamed ‘Satchmo’, he is one of the most influential trumpeters and vocalists of all time. His music can still be heard in the mainstream today in movies or on television, adding personal flair manifested in vocal styling through ‘scatting,’ which propelled his music through generations and changes in taste.

    Whistle While You Work

    If you’re like me, put on our WordPress Core Playlist or scroll through the list below, picking and choosing from the list. Or take a long walk, or pop open your laptop and code with this as your personal soundtrack.

  • Meet Trekipuu, WordCamp Santa Clarita Wapuu

    Meet Trekipuu, WordCamp Santa Clarita Wapuu

    Star Date 26072425: In this sector of the universe, lore holds that a beautiful, graceful, and mysterious group of creatures made first contact with the indigenous people around Castaic Lake. Songs of explorers appearing ‘suddenly,’ in silver ships and spacesuits that sparkled like the stars in the night skies above Santa Clarita.

    But just as abruptly, the disappeared. Until now…

    In the skies tonight

    Reports of scientists at the Griffith Observatory detecting recurring audio signals of unknown origins in the fall of 2025. Community leaders and epigraphists were brought in to compare these sounds and study markings left behind by those prehistoric explorers.

    “Returning for the fourth…” and “Bold Go…”

    Meet Trekipuu

    Sightings of crew of four Trekipuu, a race of Wapuu from Cestus III, repeating these phrases went viral on socials in the northern quadrants of Los Angeles County. Local and global WordPress communities planned gatherings to welcome them back.

    Trekipuu, WordCamp Santa Clarita Wapuu

    Sporting a retro spacesuit in vibrant greens, blues, and oranges protect a traditionally drawn Wapuu from the harshness of interstellar travel to WordCamp Santa Clarita in Southern California.

    What is a Wapuu?

    The idea for what we now know as a Wapuu began in 2009 when Matt Mullenweg asked the Japanese WordPress community for ideas on a mascot to promote its open-source project in this area. Illustrator Kazuko Kaneuchi created the character that was unveiled on February 11, 2011 at WordCamp Fukuoka.
